BULLETIN CAPTURE PROGRAM Ver 1.0CRICß for CRS using ICOM
Copyright (C) 1991 By John Leaver-Power
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
*********************
This packet contains a set of files for use with Intellicomm (ICOM
0.93) and PCB (14.5) used by CRS. In addition, the program assumes your
unarchive utility is PKUNZIP, although you can easily change this if
needed. Lastly the program assumes your initial conference joined at
logon is 2. Strictly speaking this is not a requirement, but you should
be aware that the script file will end by returning you to conference 2.
PURPOSE
*******
The purpose is to incorporate your favorite bulletins into a downloaded
mail packet whenever the "New Bulletins since last time on" message
appears. Currently CRS does not allow downloading of bulletins either as
files or within mail packets. As an alternative to reading them online,
this program will capture the bulletins using ICOM and rezip them into
the current mail packet CRS.QWK. They can then be read by your offline
mail reader. Any mail reader will work provided it supports bulletins
in standard format.
LIMITATIONS
***********
There is no limit to the number of bulletins to monitor per conference,
or to the number of conferences to check.
Since the bulletins are captured from the screen, the "download" time
is much slower than with zipped files. Essentially we are
"downloading" in uncompressed format. Typical scroll time is 1 minute
for Bulletin 5 (Hot Files) using a 2400 bps modem. Still much faster
than reading online, but you should carefully select the bulletins to be
monitored so that you don't run short of online time.
Due to my limited programming ability, the INSTALL program must be run
from an empty directory or from a floppy disk. Changing the bulletin
list involves re-running the INSTALL program.
The captured bulletins will NOT be incorporated into CRS.QWK unless a
mail packet is actually downloaded. The bulletin files will remain in
the capture directory, unknown to your mail reader, until CRS.QWK
appears in the message directory, hopefully during your next BBS
session. If the New Bulletins are updated again by CRS and captured
during your next session, they will over-write the old bulletins.
To avoid this situation, use a text reader to examine the bulletins
prior to your next mail session.
There is a problem with ICOM version 0.93 that may cause misaligned
text and "freezing" of the program when used with a hi-speed modem, ie
14K bps or greater. Wayne has promised a fix in the next version.
HOW IT WORKS
************
Don't be scared off by the number of files in this packet. Only 3 small
files control the operation.
CAPBUL.SCR: Run from within an ICOM job, this script file starts the
operation, runs a batch file to see if your bulletins have
been updated, and if so, captures them to the appropriate
files. The captured bulletins are in the format BLT-x.y
where "x" is the conference number, and "y" is the bulletin
number.
IFBUL.BAT: This file is called by CAPBUL.SCR above and tests to see if
your bulletins have been updated since your last time on.
If so, it creates a temporary flag file. When CAPBUL.SCR
detects this flag file it will start the capture. The flag
file is R50HAU1V.TXT, a randomly generated name which
ensures no conflict with any existing files in your ICOM
directory.
POSTMAIL.BAT: When added to ICOM's POSTMAIL.BAT, these instructions
embed the captured bulletin files into your downloaded
CRS.QWK message packet.
All three files are created by INSTALL.EXE

LEGAL STUFF
***********
I originally intended to release this program as freeware but decided
otherwise after almost four weeks of work. Accordingly, it is now a
SHAREWARE program. This SHAREWARE license does not include the REPLACE,
FGREP and MAKELINE files which are not my creation. Keeping a low budget
in mind, I am requesting the enormous amount of $5.00. (Cdn yet!)
Why should you register? Aside from currently being a significant
source of income to me, I'm putting together a collection of small ICOM
add-ons that I've made to date. ALL future updates to this "tool box",
as well as any new programs I make for ICOM, will be available to you
AT NO FURTHER COST via CRS. Hopefully with enough funds, I can
buy a few basic programming tools to develop better additions to the
"tool box". If you find this program useful, please send your cheque

INSTALLATION
************
Copy all of the above files to an EMPTY directory on your hard disk, or
to a floppy diskette. The hard disk option will run significantly
faster.
From DOS, change to the directory/floppy, and type INSTALL
You will need the following information to run INSTALL:
The drive letter and directory name which contains ICOM.EXE,
The directory names which contain your SCRIPT and CAPTURE files,
The name of your capture file, usually ICOM.CAP. This filename
must be common to all the Jobs which use this bulletin capture
program.
The directory name which contains your mail packets from CRS.
After the installation, I recommend keeping all the program files in an
empty directory so you can easily reconfigure the "Bulletin List" at any
time. I use C:\ICOM\BLTCFG\ as the storage directory.
Then modify the ICOM job(s) to include the @CAPBUL script.
This is done from within ICOM's Job Directory window. For example, a
job called CRSMAIL which sends replies and gets new mail would look like
this:
Call Canada Remote System
CC:@CAPBUL
Drop off message replies
Get all new mail
Exit to DOS
CHANGING THE BULLETIN LIST
**************************
Run INSTALL.EXE again.
To remove ALL bulletins from ALL conferences, press F10 when first
provided with this option.
This version of INSTALL cannot recall your old configuration, so the
safest way to make changes is to re-enter your complete list. As I get
better at programming, this may change.
NOTE TO PMDBM USERS
*******************
If you use one of my other "tools", FLIST.BAT (NFICPM5.ZIP), to View
New Files using ICOM's Tagger program, there is a simple addition to
FLIST that will invoke INSTALL when needed. Drop me a line, and I'll
send you the details.
USAGE
*****
This is the easy part. Just run the job as you normally would, and stand
back!
That's it. Enjoy.
